Hils and Hels (Hilary Fisher and Helen Whittington) are two multi-talented classically trained vocalists, each with a highly impressive CV of operatic appearances in major roles and venues. Shunning the pomposity of the classical world their show is firmly tongue in cheek and incorporates a rich mix of styles and genres from musicals to music halls, cabaret to spoof arias interwoven with slickly delivered comedy and a good measure of sassiness. Accompanied by one of their virtuoso concert pianists, the show is a feast of high energy, fast paced good fun that appeals to all ages.

Three dancers, Britain’s most sought after Flamenco guitarist, one vocalist and a multi-instrumentalist percussionist make up the awesome and raw energy of Sumaya, probably London’s finest example of this genre. Forged from a meeting of minds and talents from around the globe, they take this traditional Spanish art form and reproduce it as it should be, in the intimacy of a small hall with few frills, immediately transforming it with their collective energy and red blooded passion. A fantastic assault on the senses, this is an evening that will inspire young and old alike.

Essex on Tour is proud to present a number of performances by the internationally renown Yangzhou Puppet company as part of the Essex-Jiangsu Festival. An ancient tradition that originally developed as a cultural ritual, it was popularized by the Chinese Royal Family as a form of entertainment as far back as 947BC. A cast of eight highly skilled puppeteers employ the beautifully crafted rod, ‘zhang’ puppets to present a series of shows including the Dance of the Long Sleeves, Hawaiian Belly Dance, The Magical Changing face and a classic Chinese fable that bears more than a passing resemblance to the Gruffalo. Also involving calligraphy, dancing and drawing, this is a unique opportunity to be immersed in Chinese lore as well as simply enjoy such intricate craftsmanship.

Mr Keeper is a broom wielding janitor in a rainbow-covered dust jacket who looks after the neglected old books in a dilapidated library. Coming across a strange object, he uncovers a huge six-foot book with five coloured pages each of which reproduce into character form, unraveling a multi-coloured story. Devised and performed by Philip Sherman, it champions the ethos of ‘bringing books to life for children’ quite literally and in an eccentric and fun way.

| Born out of the Old Rope String Band which sadly came to an untimely end with the tragic death of Joe Scurfield comes the New Rope String Band, a testimony to their irrepressible energy and joie de vivre. If they had a mission statement it would be ‘Boundless energy, exuberant spectacles and beautiful music executed with kindness’. They play a big assortment of things and all sorts of hoedown pan-celtic old-timey up-beat down-home music. All this is combined with bizarre physical nonsense and clowning about. And singing. And dancing.
We’re proud to have them back and thoroughly recommend this as a cure-all for the winter blues.
